Colombia's Serranía de la Macarena National Park is comprised by tropical forests and one of the world's most beautiful rivers: Caño Cristales, also known as the River of the Seven Colors. Over the past 50 years, much of Serranía de la Macarena National Park has unfortunately been destroyed by illegal coca plantations and cattle ranches.
In partnership with La Manigua Lodge, located within the national park, the Avila Foundation is working to rehabilitate 8.5 hectares of forest within the lodge's own reserve, aiming to increase biodiversity by introducing endemic tree species.
Tree species currently being collected (April and May) and germinated in the nursery include: Guaba Inga (Inga edulis), Balso (Ochroma pyramidale), Gualanday (Jacaranda mimosifolia), Cedro Negro (Juglans neotropica), Cacay (Caryodendron orinocense), Algarrobo (Hymenaea courbaril), Cedro amargo (Cedrela odorata), and Cajeto o nacedero (Trichanthera gigantea). The saplings will be planted during the summer months.
Avila Reizen, through the Avila Foundation, is providing financial support for this project through the contributions collected to cover the impact of international flights for Avila Reizen travelers.
Traveling allows you to discover the world, its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. With the Avila Foundation, we aim to create a better world by improving the living conditions of socially and economically disadvantaged children and local communities in developing countries. We also contribute to projects that focus on nature conservation and improving the living conditions of (protected) animal species, thereby creating a better balance between people and nature. The Avila Foundation focuses on small-scale projects related to people, the environment, and animal welfare (People, Planet & Wildlife).
