The Sembalun region, located in East Lombok, Indonesia, faces a significant water problem. Based on observation data conducted by Kemangkuan Adat Tanaq Sembalun (Keatas) in 2019, the Sembalun district has lost 104 springs over the past 22 years. Of the 10 remaining springs, two have dried up.
The Sembalun Destination Management Organization has translated past poor conservation results into an innovative step-by-step plan to restore the ecosystem and thus restore the natural water supply.
By establishing the Beboka Nursery, we are providing endemic seeds that children can plant during the appropriate season. During the aftercare period, key to the conservation project's success, the Pekasih (representing Sembalun's local wisdom) serve not only as tree caretakers but, more importantly, as a source of valuable information about the condition of Sembalun's water, which they share with the nursery school students. This action bridges the intergenerational communication gap between the older and younger generations.
Avila Reizen, through the Avila Foundation, has been providing financial support for this project since 2023, thanks to donations from the carbon footprint offsets collected for the international flights of Avila Reizen travelers.

Traveling allows you to discover the world, its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. With the Avila Foundation, we aim to create a better world by improving the living conditions of socially and economically disadvantaged children and local communities in developing countries. We also contribute to projects that focus on nature conservation and improving the living conditions of (protected) animal species, thereby creating a better balance between people and nature. The Avila Foundation focuses on small-scale projects related to people, the environment, and animal welfare (People, Planet & Wildlife).
